THE LOST PLOT by Genevieve Cogman (Macmillan UK, Berkley US)

With a million things (no exaggeration!) to do before leaving for vacation in Italy, I’m posting my happy book birthdays for this week and next a little early, but I hope that I can be forgiven for that, especially when I return with wonderful travel experiences and pictures to share with the class!

So, without further ado, happy upcoming book birthdays to…

Queen-Swords THE QUEEN OF SWORDS by R.S. Belcher | Tor | June 27th

(Barnes & Noble, Amazon, IndieboundBooks-a-million)

“Belcher’s enjoyable third historical fantasy (after The Shotgun Arcana) employs considerable imagination to drop readers into a fully formed world of magic and mysticism, drawing on ancient cultures and rituals while serving up exciting action sequences… Fans of the Golgotha series will adore this, and new readers will find a rich new world to fall into as well as two very strong heroines to root for.” —Publishers Weekly

“Once again letting loose the reins on his formidable imagination and skill, Belcher creates another undeniable winner with his whimsically horrific characters, unparalleled worldbuilding, stimulating narrative and a diabolical storyline teeming with magic, mayhem and dark humor. Fans will cheer the powerful female protagonists who are indeed the queens of this world.” —RT Book Reviews, 4 ½ Stars, Top Pick!

1870. Maude Stapleton, late of Golgotha, Nevada, is a respectable widow raising a daughter on her own. Few know that Maude belongs to an ancient order of assassins, the daughters of Lilith, and is as well the great-great-great-great-granddaughter of Anne Bonney, the legendary female pirate.

Leaving Golgotha in search of her daughter Constance, who has been taken from her, Maude travels to Charleston, South Carolina, only to find herself caught in the middle of a secret war between the Daughters of Lilith and their ancestral enemies, the monstrous Sons of Typhon. To save Constance, whose prophetic gifts are sought by both cults, Maude must follow in the footsteps of Anne Bonney as she embarks on a perilous voyage that will ultimately lead her to a lost city of bones in the heart of Africa―and the Father of All Monsters.

One of the most popular characters from The Six-Gun Tarot and The Shotgun Arcana ventures beyond Golgotha on a boldly imaginative, globe-spanning adventure of her own!

stillhouse lake STILLHOUSE LAKE by Rachel Caine|Thomas & Mercer| July 1st

(Amazon, Barnes & Noble, IndieboundBooks-a-million)

“Caine spins a powerful story of maternal love and individual self-realization that cries out for at least one redeeming sequel. Compelling characters and plenty of credible plot twists…” —Publishers Weekly

Gina Royal is the definition of average—a shy Midwestern housewife with a happy marriage and two adorable children. But when a car accident reveals her husband’s secret life as a serial killer, she must remake herself as Gwen Proctor—the ultimate warrior mom.

With her ex now in prison, Gwen has finally found refuge in a new home on remote Stillhouse Lake. Though still the target of stalkers and Internet trolls who think she had something to do with her husband’s crimes, Gwen dares to think her kids can finally grow up in peace.

But just when she’s starting to feel at ease in her new identity, a body turns up in the lake—and threatening letters start arriving from an all-too-familiar address. LostBoy.jpg LOST BOY by Christina Henry | Berkley | July 4th

(Barnes & Noble, Amazon, IndieboundBooks-a-million)

“Bestseller Henry (Red Queen) will delight readers with this thrilling origin story, which reveals the true Peter Pan and the long road that led Jamie the lost boy to become pirate captain James Hook… Multiple twists keep the reader guessing, and the fluid writing is enthralling. Henry perfectly captures what it’s like to live on Peter’s island, and Jamie is a powerful character. Through his perspective, Henry immerses the reader in Neverland and genuinely shocks with the meanings behind Peter’s secrets and the intentions of his adventures. This is a fine addition to the shelves of any fan of children’s classics and their modern subversions.” —Publishers Weekly, Starred Review

“…a deeply impactful, imaginative and haunting story of loyalty, disillusionment and self-discovery.” RT Book Reviews, 4 ½ Star Top Pick!

From the national bestselling author of Alice comes a familiar story with a dark hook—a tale about Peter Pan and the friend who became his nemesis, a nemesis who may not be the blackhearted villain Peter says he is…

There is one version of my story that everyone knows. And then there is the truth. This is how it happened. How I went from being Peter Pan’s first—and favorite—lost boy to his greatest enemy.

Peter brought me to his island because there were no rules and no grownups to make us mind. He brought boys from the Other Place to join in the fun, but Peter’s idea of fun is sharper than a pirate’s sword. Because it’s never been all fun and games on the island. Our neighbors are pirates and monsters. Our toys are knife and stick and rock—the kinds of playthings that bite.

Peter promised we would all be young and happy forever.

Peter lies.

While we’re on the subject of new releases, right now if you pre-order UNDER THE PARISIAN SKY by Alli Sinclair, you receive exclusive content AND are entered to win a beautiful pendant. It’s a win-win-possible-win situation!

Happy Election Day! At least, I hope that it will be a happy election day. Signs are good. Time will tell. The alternative…doesn’t bear thinking about. So get out there and vote, hopefully for progress rather than regress. For positivity instead of hate, misogyny, bigotry, bullying.  Well, I think you all know my stand by now. If not, my earlier post on victimization may give you some clue. Going positive now myself – I’m with her. I’m excited that within the past decade, we’ve seen the first African-American president and that we’ll very likely see the first female president as well. I’m excited that kids are growing up to see change and progress and ceilings being shattered. We’ve got a long way to go, and we can’t rest, but it’s amazing to see how far we’ve come.

I’m also excited about two new November releases by Karen Whiddon, one a two-in-one with Addison Fox! If you need a break from this election, if you love love, here are some excellent options!

Especially when his heart tells him otherwise!

Heat of a Helios by Karen Whiddon

This Christmas, all pop star Meghan Frost wants is Gabriel Stavros. But little does she know that the hunk who runs the Archangel casino is really a Helios. Or that he’s her age-old enemy. Dare she believe in some holiday magic that could unite the unlikeliest of allies?

He promises to help her in exchange if she’ll help him track down his runaway niece—and stay with him. It’s an offer she cannot resist and a powerful attraction she cannot deny…

I have three very different but all awesome new releases coming out next week.  Since it’s a holiday weekend coming up, I wanted to spread the word early (often is good too!).

tempting the dragon.jpg

TEMPTING THE DRAGON by Karen Whiddon

Investigative reporter Rance Sleighter had promised to prove the mythical Lake Creature existed. But its protector had already given him a heap of trouble, as well as inspired one too many hot fantasies. If Rance was going to get some answers, he’d have to get on the gorgeous Jade Burnett’s good side…and keep her away from his bed!

For generations, Jade’s shape-shifting pack had kept the Creature safe. Now Rance’s appearance had her rethinking all her vows. She’d seen him in her dreams, knew he was a shifter and that they possibly shared a life-changing bond. Yet could she find the courage to trust the dragon with the truth…and her own fragile heart?

This year started out with such a bang (in all the best ways except my back going out) that I wasn’t sure I was going to find time to blog in 2016.  I was literally dancing as fast as I could to keep on top of things (a la Buffy in Once More With Feeling).  However, I’ve emerged from my mad dance inspired and only slightly singed. For some of what I’ve been working on, you can check out Tor UK’s announcement of the acquisition of two new books in Genevieve Cogman’s Invisible Library series. More announcements to come!

On February 18th I did my first new post on How Books Saved my Life.  It really is a dream come true to be part of the publishing process, and I’ve discovered that no matter how busy I become, I’m unable to resist bubbling over when my authors’ new releases hit the shelves.  And so, today I’m very excited to celebrate the following February book birthdays!

Foxtrot has seen a lot of strange things as assistant to billionaire Zelda Zoransky at her wacky mansion. And that includes her telepathic cat Tango and ectoplasmic pooch Whiskey. The special effects look pretty convincing. But all that fake blood doesn’t fool Whiskey, who quickly sniffs out the truth: one of those corpses is real…

Before you can say, “Lights, camera, murder,” Foxtrot and her furry partners-in-crime-solving are caught up in the drama of who-killed-who…and why. With a crazy cast of characters including a neurotic director, a star-hungry diva-even with an appearance by Lassie’s ghost-it’s bound to have one hell of a twist ending. In the Novels of the Golden City, J. Kathleen Cheney created a “mesmerizing” (Publishers Weekly) realm where magic, history, and intrigue combine. Now, she presents a new world ruled by psychic talents and fatal magic…

Her augmented senses allow her to discover and feel things others can’t, but her talents come with a price: a constant assault of emotions and sensations has left her blind. A member of the royal family’s guard, Mikael Lee also possesses an overwhelming power—he dreams of the deaths of others, sometimes in vivid, shocking detail, and sometimes in cryptic fragments and half-remembered images.

But then a killer brings a reign of terror to the city, snuffing out his victims with an arcane and deadly blood magic. Only Shironne can sense and interpret Mikael’s dim, dark dreams of the murders. And what they find together will lead them into a nightmare…

My good friend (and Knight Agency client) Deborah Blake also has an awesome new release out in February:

wickedly powerful WICKEDLY POWERFUL by Deborah Blake

The author of Wickedly Wonderful returns to her “addicting”* world of Russian witches in the latest Baba Yaga novel.

Known as the wicked witch of Russian fairy tales, Baba Yaga is not one woman, but rather a title carried by a chosen few. They keep the balance of nature and guard the borders of our world, but don’t make the mistake of crossing one of them…

The only thing more fiery than Bella Young’s red hair is her temper. She knows that a Baba Yaga’s power without strict control can leave the people she cares about burned, so to protect her heart—and everyone around her—the only company she keeps is her dragon-turned-Norwegian-Forest-cat, Koshka.

But when Bella is tasked with discovering who’s setting magical fires throughout Wyoming’s Black Hills, she finds herself working closely with former hotshots firefighter Sam Corbett—and falling hard for his quiet strength and charm.

Sam may bear the scars of his past, but Bella can see beyond them and would do anything to help him heal. Only before she can rescue her Prince Charming, she’ll have to overcome the mysterious foe setting the forest fires—a truly wicked witch who wields as much power and even more anger than Bella…
