First, huge congratulations to Faith Hunter for her Audie Award nomination in the Paranormal category for BLOOD OF THE EARTH, the first in her Soulwood series, read by Kristine Hvam!

In other audio news, R.S. Belcher’s THE BROTHERHOOD OF THE WHEEL was named Fit for the Big Screen by Audible.com in their recent promotion. I couldn’t agree more.

While we’re on the big screen, Book Riot listed N.K. Jemisin’s THE HUNDRED THOUSAND KINGDOMS as one of their 5 Diverse Fantasies that Need Movie Adaptations!

And now, I’m excited to present this week’s new releases – paranormal romance, and superheroes and secret identities!

twilight-crossing TWILIGHT CROSSING by Susan Krinard (Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Kobo)

Bound by blood, sealed in secrets

A half-blood Rider, Timon has a duty to anyone under his protection, but his intense attraction to scientist Jamie McCullough is complicating his latest mission. In a moment of desperation, he makes a difficult choice. His bite heals her—and creates a bond that neither of them can resist.

As she heads for a conclave convened to create new peace between humans and vampires, Jamie carries a secret that could secure peace everlasting. But before she has a chance to reveal it, she’s accused of bringing a vampire-killing virus to the negotiations. Though Timon is willing to pay the ultimate price to save her, can he first win the ultimate challenge of her trust?

super-city-cops3SUPER CITY COPS: SECRET IDENTITIES by Keith R.A. DeCandido (Kindle, Nook, Kobo)

THE THIRD CASE FOR THE SUPER CITY COPS!

Lieutenant Therese Zimmerman’s life is turned upside down when a badly injured Spectacular Man stumbles into her apartment and reveals himself to be her on-again, off-again boyfriend, philanthropist Marc McLean.

At the same time, Detectives Kristin Milewski and Jorge Alvarado investigate what seems to be a simple murder of four homeless people by a powerful supervillain. Unknown to them, the murders are connected to how Spectacular Man got hurt. Now Zimmerman must choose between the person she cares about and her duty as a cop.

ABOUT THIS SERIES

The great metropolis of Super City is the home of dozens of costumed heroes — the Terrific Trio, the Bruiser, the Superior Six, the Cowboy, and many more — who do battle against the super-villains who terrorize the citizenry.

These aren’t their stories …

When the heroes are done punching out the villains, it’s left to the stalwart men and women of the Super City Police Department to restrain them, arrest them, and hope that this time there’s enough evidence to actually convict them.

Just another day on the job for the Super City Cops.

Happy New Year! Despite our challenges ahead, I hope it truly will be a happy, healthy, hopeful, magical new year for you all.

I’m excited about the kick off to the year, which has already included:

I have a happy book birthday shout-out as well! Or a happy novella birthday, anyway, for Keith R.A. Decandido’s Super City Cops: UNDERCOVER BLUES, the second in the series after SCC: AVENGING AMETHYST, which was published last month.

ac-heresy ASSASSIN’S CREED: HERESY by Christie Golden [B&N, Amazon, Kobo, Indiebound]

From New York Times bestselling author Christie Golden comes an original story set in the universe of Assassin’s Creed.  Reliving the memories of his ancestor who fought beside Joan of Arc, high-ranking Templar Simon Hathaway slowly uncovers secrets of the past that could dangerously impact his present…and that of the entire Templar order.

An endless conflict.  An old wrong.  A new revelation.

Simon Hathaway, member of the Templar Inner Sanctum, brings a cool head and detached manner to his new role as Head of Abstergo Industry’s Historical Research Division.

But Simon also has an insatiable curiosity, and is fascinated by the thought of experiencing history first-hand through his ancestor–Gabriel Laxart, who fought alongside the legendary Joan of Arc.

When he enters the newly-designed Animus for its initial project, Simon finds himself unprepared for what he discovers: How deep the conflict between the Templars and the Assassins goes. What Gabriel will do for the woman he both loves and reveres.

And the most dangerous truth of all: Who is the heretic…and who is the true believer.

In book two of the Tales of Asgard Trilogy another legendary hero takes center stage, as Marvel’s Sif comes to the defense of a village under attack by a dragon. Now she must find a way to save both the village and the man within the beast. The epic trilogy continues with The Warriors Three in the final installment of the series, coming in June 2016.

Six months ago Vanessa Raines lost her best friend.

Lisa had changed, pushing away everyone close to her, even Vanessa. She had quit soccer. Started wearing dark and dismal clothes. She refused every offer to talk and suffered whatever she was going through in silence. Now she’s really gone. Suicide they claim, but Vanessa knows that isn’t right. It can’t be.

Vanessa blames herself for letting Lisa chase her off. She wants answers, so that she can put to rest the rumors surrounding Lisa’s death and so that she can move on, heal. But Lisa left no note and the journal she was always scribbling in—which might tell all—is mysteriously missing.

As Vanessa struggles to come to terms with the loss of her friend and to reconstruct the last months of Lisa’s life, someone calling themselves “Poetic Justice” begins taking revenge against those he or she thinks drove Lisa to suicide. Everyone at school believes Vanessa is this mysterious “Poetic Justice”. It’s easy to blame the former best friend, and Vanessa makes an obvious target.

Struggling with her own guilt, Vanessa is determined to ignore the threats and allegations aimed her way. But as Poetic Justice’s vengeance takes a darker turn, retaliation against Vanessa begins to escalate, from cyber bullying to violence, putting both her and the little sister she adores in the line of fire. To protect them both, she has to find out who’s behind the attacks before things turn deadly. And hope she can survive the truth.

No, no, no, it cannot be June already.  It’s not possible!  (Though my thermostat begs to differ.)

Due to vacation and other insanity, I’m a bit behind on my book birthdays, but I’m pleased to wish very happy releases to these wonderful May books!

dark journey DARK JOURNEY by Susan Krinard

Others in the Nightsiders series: DAYSIDER, NIGHTMASTER, SHADOWMASTER, NIGHT QUEST

TORN BETWEEN PEACE AND PASSION…

Former serf Daniel had journeyed to Tanis in search of harmony between humans and vampires. Though the citadel’s facade promised peace, it wasn’t difficult to find the danger lurking in the shadows. Yet it was the Bloodlady known as Isis, an ancient, beautiful vampire, who proved the biggest threat to Daniel’s heart.

No human had ever excited Isis the way Daniel did. Though she desired him like no other, she knew he had been damaged, body and soul, by her own kind. Would his past forever stand between them? Or, worse, would the malicious forces who made Tanis their home destroy them both before they could explore their deepest hungers?

kali's wrath.jpg Stargate SG1: KALI’S WRATH by Keith R.A. DeCandido

When the only surviving member of SG-7 brings Kali’s injured First Prime back to Stargate Command, Colonel O’Neill and his team are called on to investigate an attack by the Reetou on one of Kali’s homeworlds. But when a sabotaged Stargate leaves O’Neill, Carter and Daniel trapped off-world, Teal’c must team up with Kali’s First Prime, Jacob Carter, and Bra’tac to rescue his missing team. Meanwhile, the rest of SG-1 is presented with an offer they can’t refuse – to help Kali negotiate peace with the Reetou, or see thousands of her people massacred as punishment for their refusal. As time ticks down to the fateful meeting between Kali and the Reetou, SG-1 must escape before they fall victim to the Reetou’s deadly subterfuge …

Moving into June now, I’m so pleased to see Genevieve Cogman’s wonderful novel THE INVISIBLE LIBRARY on Amazon’s list of Best Books of the Month: Science Fiction & Fantasy.

Also, Wired Book Club has finished up their reading of THE FIFTH SEASON by N.K. Jemisin, and she’ll be chatting with them about it on June 4th. (Warning on the link to this: there will be spoilers, so don’t click here if you haven’t read.)

There are many more great reads ahead, so stay tuned!

thor dueling with giants I was tempted to start out with some really bad puns, suggesting you get off your feet if they’re Thor from all your holiday shopping and settle in with a good book, but I won’t subject you to all that.  Instead, I’ll just begin with a *Kermit flail* and an announcement that the first book in Marvel’s Asgard trilogy, THOR: Dueling with Giants by Keith R.A. DeCandido is out today in e-book! (Print version coming in the spring.)

Cover copy:

One of the greatest heroes from Marvel—and myth—returns as Thor battles the mightiest of the giants in a fight to the death. The first book in an action-packed trilogy, Dueling with Giants is a story of epic combat from start to finish, sure to entertain fans of Marvel comics and adventure novels alike.

During just another day for the God of Thunder, Thor is defending Asgard against invading trolls when the unthinkable happens—his hammer, Mjolnir, loses its enchantment, depleting Thor’s strength. Thor is still more than a match for his enemies; after vanquishing them, he learns the secret to his sudden weakness: Mjolnir has been switched! And only one being is cunning enough to carry out such a trick: Thor’s own adopted brother, Loki.

As punishment, Odin imprisons Loki for a year, but the trickster soon takes on other forms and escapes his imprisonment. He provokes a dispute between Odin and the giant Hrungnir—one that soon brings a full-scale attack on Asgard and a one-on-one challenge to Thor himself.

Dueling with Giants will be followed by two more riveting installments featuring Sif and the Warriors Three, all written by Marvel veteran and popular fantasy author Keith R.A. DeCandido. The Tales of Asgard Trilogy will be an adventure that Marvel readers won’t soon forget.

fifth season

THE FIFTH SEASON by N.K. Jemisin

I’m about to head up to NY for a host of meetings and the World Fantasy Convention, thus, only a brief write-up of the 2050 Convention that took place this past weekend in Daytona Beach.  This was the first year for the 2050 Convention, and the timing was unfortunate, both that it was Halloween weekend and that it was up against the established Spooky Empire Convention only an hour or so away in Orlando.  It was set up as a huge gaming, media and cosplay con and had some wonderful guests, like my client Keith R.A. DeCandido, Michael Biehn (Reese from the first Terminator film), Gigi Edgley from Farscape and many others, and a well laid out dealers room, where I had the good fortune to sit between Bill Hatfield (author and friend) and John Stanko (artist), but… Well, hardly anyone came. Still, Bill, his wife Karen, and I had a blast at the zombies vs. gypsies pub crawl, where we listened to a fabulous band.  Pete (my husband) and I saw two beautiful sunrises along Daytona Beach. And…well, there is no and.

I hope the con will do better next year.  It’s a beautiful setting, right there on Daytona Beach, and potentially a good con, but I feel badly for the vendors and the special guests who came expecting so much more.

You can see a more extensive write-up and photos over at Comic Coverage, but for here and now, my pictures…
